Branding is important people and LawGeex got it right. The name alone got my attention. But the product kept it.
So what is LawGeex? No. It’s not an organization I belong to, although it sounds like a fun one. LawGeex is contract review software that uses… (so excited)… AI!
Before I even began my review, I took it for a test run. I picked two contracts that I use the most at my company to review to make sure I was including all the standard clauses every contract requires and that I didn’t have a strange outlier clause that is never included.
My results were pretty good. I had 2 clauses that were outliers in one of my contracts, and two clauses that I was missing in an agreement that generally included. After reviewing the missing clauses, I chose to keep them out anyway and remove the outlier. Thanks LawGeex!
My favorite and least favorite part of using LawGeex is the anticipation. It’s like taking a final exam that you think you prepared well for, but there’s always that inkling of a doubt… What if you bombed it?
I don’t think anyone likes to get negative feedback, but I needed it. I am the sole in-house counsel at my company, and it helps to have a second set of eyes (even if it’s software) reviewing my work. All in all, I think I did well and I will actually get all of my contracts reviewed by LawGeex going forward.
So how does it all work?
There are only 4 steps:
- Go to lawgeex.com
- Log in (register if you don’t have an account)
- Upload your document
- Wait for the results
While we wait for the results, let’s get to know the team behind this awesome app.
Who are the founders of LawGeex?
Noory is an international commercial lawyer turned entrepreneur, with strong legal and business acumen, having worked for a leading law firm in the areas of technology and investment.
Ilan is an Artificial Intelligence guru, having spent the last 20 years working with machine learning algorithms, as well as being an experienced CTO in the international arena.
How did they come up with the idea?
Being a lawyer, Noory’s friends and family always asked him to review their contracts, but he was often busy with a successful career and a young family. He really wanted to help them, so he started to research legal services they could use. He couldn’t find anything out there. When he dug further he realized that every day thousands of people get locked into contracts they don’t fully understand. This left them unable to negotiate better terms, and put themselves, their businesses, and their families at risk.
Noory quickly realized he could help more people faster using technology. In 2014, he partnered with Ilan Admon to start LawGeex and make his mission a reality. Together they combine their vast technology, business and legal experience to bring legal contract reviews to millions of people and businesses online.
They grew the company and their team to nearly 20 people in less than 2 years!
What are the founders’ goals?
At LawGeex, they believe that no one should sign anything they don’t understand. They’re accomplishing this mission by providing people faster, easier and more affordable online contract review.
They’re also helping In-House Counsels (myself included) and legal teams dramatically speed up their turnaround times for contract reviews, freeing up their time to focus on the other more important matters, helping their companies love their legal departments. I do feel the love!
The Marketing Strategy
So far, they’ve seen incredible growth just by word of mouth, but they’re starting to work with small businesses, offering them the chance to try the product out, and experience LawGeex for themselves. Their goal is to expand globally.
The Biggest Challenge
Their biggest challenge is to bring a revolution to the legal industry, which is still very traditional. Consumers have seen the evolution of traditional industries like travel and transportation, and now we’re driving the same awareness and innovation in legal services.
Available on All Devices
It is available on all devices but most of their customers use it on their desktop. Contracts aren’t usually reviewed while on a bus with a smartphone, so they focus on what their customers want. However, they will be launching a full mobile app later this year!
They only collect what they absolutely need, such as email address, like any on-line service. All contracts are uploaded using a HTTPS Secure Socket Layer (SSL) with 128-bit encryption, using public-private cryptographic prime-base keys. So yes, it’s secure. Very, very secure.
Free to Use
They are, and always will be, completely free for personal use! They also offer paid plans that cater to businesses of all shapes and sizes that grow as they do. Contract reviews start at as little as $20 per contract.
World domination of course! Ok, maybe not. But they always keep their mission in mind – that no one should sign anything they don’t understand. In this way, they plan to expand their services by adding new contract types and offer additional features.
Sizing up the Competition
The biggest “competitors” are the existing way of reviewing contracts – slow and costly. Other than that, there are no real competitors offering AI contract reviews en mass, to the general public.
They are the first and only online contract review platform that’s free for personal use. It’s also the first to combine fully automated, Artificial Intelligence machine learning technology, text analytics, crowdsourcing, and expert US-trained lawyers to compare and review contracts, specifically for personal and business use.
They also plan on integrating with other services, and I was promised I would be the first to know who the lucky winners are.
The Rating Scale
So LawGeex rated my contracts… but how do they rank on my scale? Let’s see…
UX – Ease of Use
5 – So easy to use, a 5-year-old can use it
4 – Good with minor improvements needed
3 – Needs some work
2 – Needs a lot of work
1 – I can’t use it
By far, the easiest legal tech software I’ve used.
UI – Appearance
5 – This looks amazing. Clean lines. Legible. Organized.
4 – Looks great. Minor corrections needed
3 – Needs some work, but functions well
2 – Needs a makeover
1 – Too messy. Makes it difficult to use and understand.
Frequency of Use by Intended Users
5 – I need this every day
4 – I use it most days
3 – I use it as I need it
2 – I’ll use it a few times this year
1 – I’ll never use it
Depending on the size of your business or the number of lawyers in your business, you could easily use this every day. I work on 3-5 contracts per day minimum, and not all of them are standard contracts. There are nuances with every relationship, so LawGeex is a huge help.
5 – Love it, can’t put it down. Tons of features.
4 – Keeps me interested most of the time. Has some good features.
3 – Not a whole lot to explore or keep me interested.
2 – I don’t hate it
1 – Yup, I hate it
Waiting for results and sorting through them (also a breeze) is actually exciting and interesting.
5 – So disruptive, a lawsuit or angry publication is in your future
4 – You solved a problem and made someone angry
3 – Solves a problem, but not groundbreaking
2 – There may be something to it, but not quite sure
1 – Doesn’t really stand out or solve any problems
If you’ve seen my previous post about Legal Tech 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0, this would fall under Legal Tech 2.0. This is where the legal tech software is a lawyer’s assistant and helps you make decisions and improve your services. Highly disruptive and helpful technology!
Only one other company has received a perfect score, and it also used AI. I may be biased, but AI just takes legal tech to the next level. Great job LawGeex!
